I get asked this question constantly: which browband will look best on my horse? And I love it, because it means riders are thinking about the full picture, not just the tack that keeps things in place, but the detail that makes everything feel intentional and complete. I have developed a clear sense of which colors and crystal tones work beautifully against different horse coats. This is my personal guide.
“The right browband does not just accessorize your horse. It reveals him.”
Pairing for the four core coat colors
Every horse coat has its own undertone and its own relationship with light. Understanding that relationship is the starting point for choosing a browband that truly complements rather than competes.
BAY Warm red-brown coat, black mane and legs
Bay horses carry warmth and richness in their coat, and the contrast with a black mane creates a natural drama that crystal browbands play into beautifully.
My top pairings for bay horses:
Gold and amber crystals: they echo the warm copper tones in the coat and make the whole picture glow under arena lights.
Deep burgundy and garnet: the richness sits perfectly against the bay coat without fighting the black points.
White and clear Preciosa crystals: a classic that lets the coat speak for itself while adding undeniable sparkle.
Emerald Green: a deep jewel-toned emerald that plays off the warm copper in the coat while the black points frame it for a bold, unexpected finish.
From our collection: Golden Majesty, Regal 24K, Ruby Diamond, and Green Dragon are designed with bay horses in mind.
GREY Silver to dapple grey, white mane
Grey horses are a browband designer’s dream. The neutral coat is a blank canvas that allows almost any crystal color to come forward clearly. The white or pale mane means the browband sits against a light background, so contrast and brilliance matter most.
My top pairings for grey horses:
Royal blue and Sapphire: cool blues against grey create a striking, modern combination that photographs exceptionally well.
Purple and Amethyst: the soft violet plays beautifully against silver dapples and reads as effortlessly elegant.
Black and Graphite: unexpected and sophisticated, this pairing gives a grey horse a theatrical, show-stopping presence.
Imperial Sapphire: a rich, saturated blue that reads as regal against silver and dapple and holds its brilliance under arena lights.
From our collection: Royal Blue Majesty, Prince of Amethyst, and Moonstone Crystal were developed with grey horses as the primary inspiration.
CHESTNUT Copper to deep auburn coat, flaxen or matching mane
Chestnut horses have some of the most complex coat tones of any color, ranging from bright copper to deep mahogany. The browband needs to work with that warmth rather than wash it out.
My top pairings for chestnut horses:
Rose Gold and Blush: the warm pink family is tailor-made for chestnut coats. It feels natural and feminine without being predictable.
Emerald and Forest Green: the complement to red on the color wheel, green against chestnut creates a rich, jewel-toned effect that turns heads.
Clear white Preciosa on dark leather: simple, precise, and incredibly effective. The brightness lifts the coat.
From our collection: Sherry’s Rose and Emerald Empress were both designed with chestnut horses in mind.
BLACK True black coat, black or very dark mane
Black horses are the most dramatic canvas available. Everything shows. Everything matters. The browband becomes a focal point in a way that it simply does not on lighter coats, which means the choice carries more weight, but also more reward.
My top pairings for black horses:
Silver and White: the classic for a reason. White Preciosa against jet black leather and a black coat is one of the most striking combinations in the arena.
Red and Crimson: bold, theatrical, and unforgettable. A red crystal browband on a black horse commands attention from the far end of the ring.
Purple and Midnight Tones: deep purples disappear slightly against a black coat but create a mysterious, layered effect that rewards close attention.
Obsidian Ice: dark crystals that melt into the coat with icy clear accents catching the light for tonal, modern sophistication.
Krystal Sovereign: bright clear-and-white Preciosa against jet-black leather for the boldest possible contrast and a true focal point from across the ring.
From our collection: Iconic, The Monarch, and Cabernet and Caviar each bring a distinct character to the black horse.
Beyond coat color: two more things to consider
YOUR SADDLE PAD
A browband and saddle pad that coordinate without being identical is the look we aim for. If you are riding in a deep navy pad, a sapphire crystal browband creates a considered, layered presentation. If you are in white, almost any crystal color works, but a bold choice becomes even bolder.
Horse Dazzle’s saddle pads are designed with this coordination in mind. Browse them alongside the browbands and trust your instinct when two pieces feel like they belong together.
YOUR RIDING DISCIPLINE
Competition rules vary across disciplines. Dressage tends toward elegance and restraint in the ring, where a clear or single-tone crystal browband reads as polished rather than showy. Hunter and equitation are more conservative still. Show jumping and western pleasure give you more room to play with color and drama.
Whatever your discipline, the right browband is the one that makes you feel confident and makes your horse look his best when you enter the gate.
A final thought
We started Horse Dazzle because we believe that every rider, regardless of budget, deserves tack that is as beautiful as the bond she or he has with their horse. Choosing a browband may seem like a small decision, but it can have a remarkable visual impact. Like selecting the perfect piece of jewelry or a signature statement accessory, the right browband enhances your horse's appearance, reflects your personal style, and adds a touch of distinction to every ride. Beyond aesthetics, functionality matters as well. A well-designed detachable browband allows riders to change colors and crystal styles in seconds, making it easy to coordinate with different saddle pads, show outfits, or occasi
ons without changing the entire bridle.
Take your time with it. Hold the crystals in the light. Think about the coat, the mane, the pad. And then choose the one that makes you smile when you imagine it on your horse.
That is always the right choice.
